Yesterday was a long and tiring day, especially for little Noah, but we can thankfully say his surgery was a success!
They were able to do Noah's entire surgery laproscopically (filling his tummy with gas and using 5 small incisions and a camera), rather than a large opening on his lower back and bum. This caused his surgery to take longer than expected, but hopefully it will make his recovery easier.
Noah was in surgery yesterday for 6 hours, which is longer than was expected. The first part of the surgery went very smoothly, detaching his lower colon from his bladder and closing the bladder. After this, they ran in to some difficulty creating a new bum hole, and attaching Noah's colon to the hole that they had made. The surgeons tried a number of times and it would not work; after coming up with another option, they decided to try one more time, and this time it worked. Praise the Lord! Because Noah was in surgery so long, the surgeons decided not to do a bronchoscopy (inspection of the lungs) knowing he was already under stress from surgery and having trouble breathing they did not want to add to this.
Noah was in recovery for 8 hours. He was breathing very rapidly and also had a fever. This is most likely due to the gas that they used to fill his tummy and the IV fluids that he was given. They wanted to monitor this carefully and decided to put Noah in the ICU overnight, where he could receive one-on-one care. He was moved up the ward this morning at 6:30 and slept soundly for the next 2 hours.
Rob and I were able to take that time to have a coffee and take a walk - rejoicing in the care our Heavenly Father has provided, taking in the beauty of the morning and feeling refreshed for this new day.
When we came back, Noah was awake; he drank a lot, had a few bites of applesauce and watched us for awhile before falling asleep again.
We praise the LORD that He has blessed us so richly and allowed the surgery to be such a success. What an awesome God we have!
We thank you all for your calls, emails and most importantly your prayers. We were surrounded by them yesterday and could definitely feel this, and needed it to help us during the long day.
