A lot can happen in 1 week…and we are happy to report that Noah is tube free!
As the week progressed they were able to lower Noah’s oxygen and pressure amount enough that they were as low as they could go and Noah was tolerating it well. On Saturday morning they removed Noah’s breathing tube and gave him oxygen through nose prongs only. Noah was doing very well on his own like this. The only draw back was that without the tubes, Noah was taken off the medication (pain killer and sedative) he was on, and he has been experiencing withdrawal because of this. Because of this, Noah was quite uncomfortable and he also rocked his head back and forth much more than he used to (he does this normally to settle himself before falling asleep). He was very sad, crying during our entire visit on Saturday with a heartbreaking cry as his vocal cords are just getting used to be used again so his voice was quite raspy.
When we went to visit Noah yesterday, he was completely off of oxygen! This is such a huge step, as Noah needs to be fully off of oxygen in order to be able to come home. His coughs are strong enough that they are able to handle whatever fluids are still in his lungs.
We were also able to bottle feed Noah, and he was so happy to get that! It was exciting to see him so hungry and able to eat on his own after 3 weeks of struggle.
Holding Noah is also much easier now without all the tubes and it feels so good to be able to cuddle our precious baby again. He was also very happy to see Danielle and Jordan!
Today they are in the process of moving Noah from PCCU up to ward, as a bed becomes available – again a huge step! They are awaiting some test results to see if Noah has an infection and waiting to see how he continues to tolerate feeds and handle his withdrawal.
We pray that his progress will continue and that soon we may be able to take Noah home with us!
