Faithfulness

‘For the word of the LORD is upright, and all his work is done in faithfulness.’ Psalm 33:4

Looking back at the date of my last post, I realize that I’m not very good at keeping this up, am I? Hopefully I can do better…

It’s been a quiet summer for us. Noah’s appointments have slowed down considerably, which is a nice break. And the good news is that this means that he is doing well! God has been so merciful and has blessed us so richly in the past few months.

Noah continues to be such a happy little boy, giving his smiles freely and at times even laughing with us! He is such a precious little boy!

The dilation tube in his urethra was removed a couple of weeks ago now. It looks completely different without the tube, a little more normal. We now need to catheterize Noah once a day to ensure that his urethra does not close up. For awhile this was proving difficult to do, as Noah was very uncomfortable with is and at times I was unable to put the catheter in. But we have worked out the kinks, and Noah has become accustomed to this. Rob and I try to do this together so that one us can keep him distracted.
This has been done in preparation for closing the vesicostomy - the open bladder in Noah's stomach. It is exciting to think of this opening being gone and have Noah urinate like other little boys. Yet this does not come without risks: the urethra needs to remain open once the hole is closed, otherwise things will start to back up and put pressure onto the kidneys. This is a serious concern because Noah only has one functioning kidney.
But we need to focus on today, and not tomorrow and so we praise God for what He has provdided this day.

Today Noah had an ultrasound for his spine. To the best of my knowledge, this was just a sort of routine ultrasound, just to ensure that things with Noah’s spine were fine and I was quite sure that everything was alright. As it turns out, Noah’s spine is not completely like all of ours. I know that I’m not going to explain this quite correctly, but I’ll do my best: all of our spinal cords are ‘tethered’ at the bottom, and this is completely normal. The have discovered that Noah’s spine is tethered a little higher than it should be (let’s say ours is tethered from vertebrae 3 and Noah’s from vertebrae 5). This, in teenage years and growth spurts, can cause back pain and it does require surgery to fix, and it does need to be fixed; not urgently, but eventually.

It was so hard not to become disheartened by this news. It’s another thing to add to Noah’s list of concerns and it means another surgery for my little boy.
Yet we know that the LORD is in control here, He has a plan, He sees everything that happens and has the strength to carry us when we are not strong enough to stand.
He bestows blessings continuously, and if we try to count them, they are more than we are able to.
I recently discovered a song that has become one of my favourites. It is called ‘Blessings’. To hear it, click here.
